Drip Tray and Firebox: The Deep Clean

Two jobs share this page and they run on different clocks. The tray comes out cold after every cook because that is where a grease fire begins. The firebox gets the long treatment once a season, and the order you take it apart in is the whole trick.

  1. 01

What does the tray need after an ordinary cook?

Cooling, then sliding out and wiping. Wolf ties it straight to fire risk: clear the tray after every use, and never run the grill unless it is fitted and pushed the whole way home. Foil is no shortcut, and the older Wolf guide says why — a lined tray hampers combustion and airflow and traps heat where nothing should be hot. A tray that will not run on its rails is for Wolf Repair Service Los Angeles on (310) 928-9768.

What does the seasonal clean actually involve?

Heat first, hands afterwards. Every grill burner goes to high with the sear burner included and the rotisserie burner left out, hood down, ten to twelve minutes. Then off, and stone cold. Grates and briquette trays lift away, the burner tubes and the infrared sear burner are covered with plastic wrap so nothing caustic lands on them, and oven cleaner goes on the interior. And the smoker box, if you use one?

Out cold, emptied, washed in warm water with a mild detergent. A little warping is expected rather than alarming, because the sealed box distorts in the heat and pulls back to shape as it cools. It never goes above the infrared sear burner, and no briquette tray does either. Wolf Repair Service Los Angeles can tell a warped box from a split one on (310) 928-9768.

Why is this the fire card of the handbook?

Because grease is a fuel the grill was never designed to burn. It gathers in the tray, in the corners of the box and under the grates, and one heavy flare-up over a loaded tray is all the ignition it needs. Wolf's older guide is blunt about not letting large amounts build up. After a real fire in the box, call Wolf Repair Service Los Angeles on (310) 928-9768.

Yours, and ours

You can do this

  • Slide the tray out cold after each cook and wipe it back to bare metal.
  • Push it fully home against the rear of the grill before the next light-up.
  • Keep aluminium foil out of the tray and off the grates entirely.

Leave this to a technician

  • Burners lifted from the firebox for the clean nobody reaches from above.
  • Scorching or heat damage inside the box after a serious flare-up.
  • A drip tray that has buckled or will no longer seat at the back.

Anything on the right-hand list is a call, not a chore. Wolf Repair Service Los Angeles takes it on at (310) 928-9768; the $89 call-out is deducted from whatever the repair comes to.

Done cold and done often, the short job keeps the long one rare.
