Wolf hood stuck on one speed, or smoke that will not clear
A hood that only runs slow, buttons that have gone dead, or a kitchen that fills with smoke anyway. How to tell a failed control panel from a blower fault, a blocked duct or a hood that was never ducted anywhere at all.

Ventilation calls arrive in two versions. Either the hood has stopped doing what the buttons say — one speed only, no lights, no response at all — or the hood runs perfectly and the kitchen still fills with smoke. Those are completely different problems, and it is worth knowing which one you have before anybody quotes you for a blower.
Two faults that look identical from the doorway
The first version is electrical and lives in the hood. Controls, wiring, the motor, the speed board.
The second version is about air, and most of it lives in the building rather than in the appliance. Duct length, elbows, a damper that no longer opens, a cap screened over with grease, a shaft shared with a neighbour, or — regularly, in remodelled Los Angeles kitchens — a duct stub that goes up into a cabinet and stops.
Start by asking one question: does the hood sound like it is working? Not whether the kitchen is clear, just whether the blower note changes when you press the buttons and whether it sounds like it always did. If the answer is yes, you have an air problem. If the answer is no, you have an electrical one.
When the buttons are the problem
Membrane control panels sit directly above a cooking surface for years, taking heat and grease from below. They fail in a very characteristic way: one button keeps working — usually the lowest speed, because it is the one pressed most and the trace that stays intact longest — and the rest go dead to the touch. Lights often stop first.
Before assuming the panel, though, rule out the cheap possibilities:
- Pull the filters and look for a reset. Some hoods lock out speeds when a filter timer runs out, and a grease-clogged baffle changes the blower’s note enough to convince you the motor is dying.
- Kill the power for a minute. A hood on a shared circuit that saw a surge can come back sulking. If a full power cycle restores all four speeds, note the date; if it happens again in a fortnight the board is going.
- Check the remote blower, if you have one. On an inline or exterior blower setup the hood can be perfectly healthy and the motor thirty feet away can be the fault. Listen at the cap outside, not at the hood.
A buzz that arrives only at full speed is usually neither the panel nor the motor winding. It is the rubber mounts under the blower going hard with age, so the housing resonates. New mounts and a balanced wheel fix it; a new motor does not, which is worth knowing before somebody sells you one.
Ask whether the hood is ducted anywhere at all
This one comes up often enough in remodelled kitchens that it deserves its own check. Take the filters out and shine a torch straight up. You are looking for a metal duct that continues past the cabinet above, not a short stub, and not a pair of charcoal filters sitting in a plenum.
Recirculating hoods are legitimate appliances, but they do not remove steam, heat or smoke from the room — they only take out what the charcoal can hold, and only while it is fresh. If nobody has changed those filters since the kitchen was built, the hood has effectively been a fan for years.
In the low-rise blocks around Beverly Grove there is a second version of this: the run is real, but it joins a shaft shared with other units and there is no back-draft damper anywhere in it. That is why you can smell somebody else’s dinner through your own hood. One damper, correctly placed, ends it.
Make-up air, and why a strong hood fights your oven
A pro-style hood over a pro-style range can move a serious volume of air. In a nineteen-twenties house near Windsor Square, with the original windows and no mechanical make-up air, that volume has to come from somewhere — and the path of least resistance is often the flue of the very oven you are cooking in.
The symptoms read as an appliance fault: the oven burner lifts off and blows out, but only when the hood is on high, and only with the doors shut. Nothing is broken. Crack a window in the next room, cook the same dish, and if the problem disappears you have your answer. The long-term fix is a make-up air path, which is building work; the short-term fix is a window and a lower hood speed.

What we do on a hood call
Filters out, cavity degreased enough to see what we are looking at, then the controls tested at the panel and at the board so we know which of the two failed. Blower current measured, mounts checked by hand, wheel inspected for grease build-up on one side — that alone puts a lot of hoods out of balance.
If the complaint is airflow rather than electrics, we follow the run: length, elbows, diameter changes, damper action at both ends, and the state of the exterior cap. Grease dripping back down onto the cooktop means a liner seam or a collection trough has opened up, and that gets sealed or replaced rather than wiped.
The $89 service call covers that whole assessment, and it comes off the bill once you approve the work. If the answer turns out to be “your hood is fine and your house is tight”, you will get that in writing too.
Follow-ups
- The hood is quiet but the smoke still hangs around. Is the blower faulty?
- Often not. If the blower sounds normal and pulls a tissue flat against the filters, the air is moving — it is going somewhere it should not, or nothing is replacing it. Check the roof or wall cap for a stuck damper and a bird screen packed with grease before condemning a motor.
- Can you fit a duct for a hood that never had one?
- We can prove where the existing run ends, service the blower and filters, and set out what a proper run would need. Cutting a new duct through a roof or a shared shaft is building work, not appliance work, so that part goes to a contractor — but you will get an honest description of the job rather than a shrug.
- Why does the oven burner blow out when I run the hood on high?
- Because the hood is winning. A strong hood in a tight house pulls the kitchen slightly below outside pressure, and the easiest air for it to find is down the flue of whatever else is burning. It is a make-up air problem, not an appliance fault, and cracking a nearby window while you cook will usually prove it in one minute.
